5 SEO Fixes That Will Actually Move the Needle for Small Businesses

Most small business websites rank poorly not because of mysterious algorithms — but because of a handful of fixable technical issues. Here's where to start.

1. Fix your page titles and meta descriptions

If your homepage title says "Home" or your business name with no context, Google has no idea what you do. Every page on your site needs a unique title that clearly describes what that page is about — ideally including a keyword your customers actually type into Google.

For example: instead of "Malabar Kitchen", use "Malabar Kitchen | Traditional Kerala Restaurant in Kondotty". It's a small change that tells both Google and your visitors exactly what to expect.

2. Speed up your website

Google uses page speed as a ranking factor, and visitors leave slow sites within seconds. The most common culprits are large uncompressed images, too many plugins (especially on WordPress), and cheap shared hosting.

Run your site through PageSpeed Insights (free from Google) and fix whatever it flags. Compressing images alone can cut load time in half.

3. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

If you have a physical location or serve a specific area, your Google Business Profile is often more important than your website for local search. Make sure your name, address, phone number, and business hours are accurate and consistent everywhere they appear online.

Add real photos, respond to reviews, and post updates occasionally. Google actively rewards active Business Profiles with better local rankings.

4. Get other websites to link to you

Links from other websites (called backlinks) are still one of Google's strongest ranking signals. The easiest way to get them as a local business is to list yourself in relevant local directories, get featured in local news or blogs, and ask partners or suppliers to link to your site.

Even 5-10 quality backlinks from relevant local sources can make a noticeable difference for a small business website that currently has none.

5. Write content that answers real questions

The quickest way to start ranking for new keywords is to write a page or blog post that directly answers a question your customers ask. Think: "best [service] in [your city]", "how much does [service] cost", "how to [problem you solve]".

You don't need to write 3,000-word essays. A 500-word, genuinely helpful answer often outranks longer content that's just trying to fill space.
